ETHICS & SUSTAINABILITY

Hopeless is a slow fashion lingerie brand based in Melbourne, Australia. Every piece is designed, cut, and sewn in-house, one by one, just for the person who orders it. There’s no mass production and no outsourcing, just lovingly created lingerie and loungewear.

MADE TO ORDER = NO WASTE

Our made to order model means we only make what’s needed. This reduces overproduction and gives us the flexibility to make custom sizing and fit adjustments. We cut everything in-house, and we’re constantly working to use every last scrap, through accessories, limited edition runs, and our upcycled Eternal collection.

SUSTAINABLE & DEADSTOCK FABRICS

We use a mix of sustainable, deadstock, and recycled fabrics across our collections. This includes:

Modal Jersey: Made from renewable beech trees, soft and breathable with minimal environmental impact
Organic Cotton: Grown without harmful chemicals, better for your skin and the planet
Hemp Jersey: Strong, breathable, and naturally antibacterial
Deadstock Lace: Sourced from other fashion businesses and textile mills to avoid waste
Recycled Synthetic Fabrics: Sometimes used for mesh and lace styles

If you ever have questions about any of the fabrics we use, just get in touch and we would be happy to share more

ETHICAL PRODUCTION

We work from our Melbourne studio with a small team of two full time staff and two interns. We share all parts of the production process, from cutting, to sewing and packing orders. Keeping our production in-house allows us to maintain full control over working conditions, quality, and waste. We do not outsource any parts of our production process.

PLASTIC FREE PACKAGING

Every Hopeless order is wrapped in recyclable tissue paper and sealed with a sticker made from FSC-certified paper and printed with natural soy-based ink. Our boxes are made from recycled cardboard. We post using home-compostable mailing bags made from renewable plant materials.

TRANSPARENCY & PROGRESS

We all always looking for ways to improve our processes, research new materials, and look for better solutions wherever we can. If you have ideas or questions about our sustainability efforts, we’d love to hear from you.

A LITTLE MORE ABOUT LENZING MODAL

We’re proud to use Lenzing Modal across our collections, a fibre produced by the innovative, sustainability focused Austrian company Lenzing. The fabric is made from Beechwood trees, which require no planting or irrigation as they propagate themselves. Working closely with the Forest Stewardship Foundation (FSC®) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC™), they can ensure that all their wood is sustainably sourced.

Unlike other similar fabrics, the processing of the fibres is where Lenzing excels, they have developed a closed loop environmental process that is not commercially available to others, these non toxic technologies allow them to recover 95% of the production materials to minimise emissions and conserve resources. In fact, Lenzing is set to be the first Carbon Neutral Fibre producer in the world. You can learn more about Lenzing and their focus on sustainability here.

Our Lenzing Modal fabric is knitted and dyed locally in Melbourne, by MTK, a small business that has been creating unique and high quality fabrics for over 85 years. Our Modal Fabric is combined with a small amount of elastane to give the fabric stretch that allows it to retain its shape after many wears.
